Pain

The effectiveness of acupuncture relieving pain has already been established in controlled clinical studies conducted by many academic and private research labs.  According to World Health Organization (WHO), acupuncture works better than a placebo for most kinds of pain, and its effective rate in the treatment of chronic pain is comparable with that of morphine. In addition, numerous laboratory studies have provided further evidence of the efficacy of acupuncture’s pain relieving action as well as an explanation of the mechanism involved. In fact, the excellent pain relieving effects of acupuncture have stimulated research on pain.
Because of the side-effects of long-term drug therapy for pain and the risks of dependence, acupuncture relieving pain can be regarded as the method of choice for treating many chronically painful conditions.

Headache

National studies show that more than 90% of the world’s population have experienced headache at least once in their lifetime and more than 70% have taken a drug for the pain. In particular, two-thirds of these people suffering from headaches are women whose symptoms have complicated by development of depression or anxiety. Headaches can be categorized as tension headaches, migraines, and stroke-related (meningitis, cerebral infarction, brain tumors). Often, the occipitocervical junction is askew and abnormal pressure on nerves and blood vessels traveling to the head may cause pain.
In cases like these, VST treatments can be administered after proper examination to relieve the symptoms and their cause. Tension headaches are the most common types and originate from stiffened muscles and fascia in the neck and shoulder. Muscle tightness in the area eventually cause stiffness and tightness in muscles of the scalp which cause the headaches. With VST treatment, release of muscle tension will allow proper blood flow and relieve the headache.

Neck pain

Most conditions relating to neck pain are often induced by reverse force on the cervical spine. The cervical spine is normally C-shaped and bad habits and posture can eventually cause the spine to increasingly lose its natural curvature. If the cervical spine loses its proper curve, the discs in between the vertebrae will undergo added stress, accelerating disc degeneration and increasing susceptibility to disease in the area.

With today’s increasing use of computers and time spend at desks; it is reasonable to suspect loss of cervical curvature in patients who experience neck stiffness and pain. When the curve of cervical spine is lessened, the surrounding muscles will become stiff and cervicothoracic junction will be prone to protrusion.
As with the shoulder pain case, VST acupuncture utilizes exams to observe position of the head and shoulder blades, the curvature of the spine, and balance in terms of muscle correlation to treat accordingly and effectively.

Back pain

The root cause of a herniated disc is malalignment of the spine and pelvis.
Sitting down for long period of time or crossing the legs in the seated position will diminish the natural S-curve of the spine to create malalignment at the pelvis.  Such unbalanced conditions of spine and pelvis will fatigue muscles around and distort the discs in between vertebrae.
Treatment is needed before further degeneration of bones. Loss of horizontal balance in the pelvic girdle is just like standing on a sloping incline. On the slope, asymmetric power is applied to both feet in order to maintain the balance and cause much more fatigue in the body. VST treatment will correct the alignment of the pelvis bilaterally and sagittally which prevents any further imbalance to cause problems.

Shoulder pain

Frozen shoulder is one of the most common diagnoses we see in patients with shoulder pain.
Simple shoulder stiffness follows pain in the middle area between the neck and shoulder joint.
Such shoulder stiffness can be caused by a variety of reasons like muscle tightness, structural problems in cervical spine, thoracic spine, or ribs and treatment approach also varies depending on the cause.
In contrast, frozen shoulder is characterized with many of the following symptoms: excruciating pain even in bed at night, difficult in lifting of the arm, and difficulty in performing daily activities such as dressing oneself. It is absolutely necessary to diagnose shoulder pain symptoms that range from muscle problems, frozen shoulder, impingement syndrome, or tear of biceps or supraspinatus tendon.
VST uses assessment techniques that help identify the cause of each disease by examining the position of the head and shoulder blades, the curvature of the spine, balance in terms of muscle correlation and treats accordingly.

Sports Injury

Playing sports is a form of recreation channeling ways for enjoyment with friends and a wonderful way to stay in shape. Whether you play sports for leisure, or as an athlete, Vertex Synchronizing Technique (VST) acupuncture can be extremely beneficial for you.  VST acupuncture can assist in both acute and chronic injury recoveries; it can reduce the adhesion between skin and connective tissue, increase the range of motion and reduce inflammation.   Also VST acupuncture can help prevent any reoccurring injuries, increase stamina and athletic performance.

Acupuncture is an integral part of the care that many professional athletes receive. National Football League players such as Steve Young and Jerry Rice from San Francisco 49ers, tennis player Maria Sharapova, and National Basketball Association basketball players such as Charles Barkley and Allen Houston of New York Knicks have all received acupuncture to keep their bodies at their top level of performance. One of the National Baseball League teams, San Francisco Giants, has an acupuncturist on board who has contributed to the team in winning their championship in 2012.

Common sport injuries that acupuncture can treat:
  • Vertebral Disc Inflammation in the Neck or Back
  • Shoulder Rotator Cuff Tears/Strains
  • Shoulder Tendinitis, Bursitis, Arthritis and Impingement Syndrome
  • Wrist Strain/Sprain
  • Elbow Strain/Sprain
  • Knee Ligament and Meniscus Injuries
  • Strain(pull)/Tears of Any Muscle or Tendon (i.e. Hamstring, Groin, Achilles Tendon)
  • Tennis Elbow, Golfer’s Elbow and Elbow Bursitis
  • Wrist Tendinitis
  • Achiniles Tendinitis
  • Hip Bursitis
  • Ankle Strain/Sprain
  • Illiotibial Band Syndrome
  • Knee Arthritis

Sports are very competitive in nature. When we are competing we like to push ourselves beyond our normal limitations, which can cause trauma inflicted by a slip, fall, or collision. No doubt when this happens, you will want to jump right back out either on to the court, field, ice rink, course, or trail as soon as possible; VST acupuncture can help you enhance recovery and reduce pain.

Majority of sport injuries are from gradual build-up overtime due to repeated over-use of a particular joint or muscles.  Usually, these types of injuries begin as a nagging dull ache.  This is the best time to start getting treatments for these injuries.  If you neglect them, they will build-up to become chronic injuries.  Once advanced, these injuries often require more recovery time than acute injuries.

It is important to distinguish between the nagging ache of a chronic injury and the typical soreness that accompanies working out?

Here are 3 general guidelines to help you determine what your ache may be telling you:

  1. Chronic injuries are often felt more in joints: shoulder, knees, elbows, wrists, hip joints.  Conversely, typical “working-out” soreness is felt more in the muscles.
  2. With an over-use injury, the nagging soreness occurs during or very shortly after playing your sports, whereas, typical muscle soreness from training doesn’t begin until 24 to 48 hours later.
  3. Chronic injuries will repeatedly occur in the same area week after week, but soreness from working out usually will not.

Auto Injury

Automobile accident injuries are often manifested as local pains in the head, neck, shoulder, back, or joints. Often times in US health care system, only severely damaged area will be treated.  The patients are usually treated for their localized pain with strong pain medications that have significant side effects.

These injuries are usually complicated. While the pain might be presented at a specific point or area of the body, the whole problem of the injury is reflected throughout your tendon, muscle, or imbalance of the dynamic of internal organs. At times the imbalance of internal organ(s) can be the root cause of certain troublesome in automobile accident injury pain.

There are four factors in treating automobile accident injuries with Eastern medicine. First, we identify which internal organs balance have been affected. Secondly, we observe if there is any shift to the dynamic of the internal organs which cannot necessarily be detected by modern diagnostic tests (i.e., blood test, x-rays, or MRI).  Thirdly, we consider the aspect of pain that might not develop until a few days or weeks after the accident from the deep tissue injuries.  Lastly, we believe that without the treatment of the internal cause, the pain cannot be fully relieved and might experience recurring pain.

Observation and careful diagnosis of the whole body system can identify and address both major and minor injuries that may have been overlooked. Unlike sports injury or simple sprain, automobile accident injury not only produces external damage but almost accompanies internal traumatic effect, more or less. That’s why automobile accident injury requires attention into internal organs as well than any other external traumas.

Acupuncture treatment and herbal medicine are a whole body treatment of internal organs dynamic as well as external symptoms. These treatments are the key to restoring the integrity of your body system and treating the root cause of the automobile accident injury.

Foot Pain

Plantar fasciitis, heel pain, and shin splint are all common types of foot pain.  Symptoms might vary from person but the pain is excruciating because the foot is bearing all the weight of a person.  Due to this reason, even slightest deviation of the structure can cause severe pain.
Causes of foot pain can be from lumbar or sacral vertebral, hip joint, knee joints but also muscles that makes up the lower extremities such as calf muscles, hamstring muscles, or pelvic muscles can be all part of the reason for pain.
Using VST, we are able to tighten muscles that have been loosened up and loosen up muscles that are stiff.  By changing the elasticity of muscles then we are able to naturally align the joint issues that are going on the lower extremities.

Sciatica

Sciatic nerve begins in the lower back and runs through the buttock and down the lower limb.
Sciatica is diagnosed when the sciatic nerve is pinched and pain appears along the nerve distribution area.
The pain can present from the hip area to the back of the thigh and calf, which in severe cases, makes it difficult to walk, sit, and lift the leg straight up when lying down. Symptoms of sciatica appear similar, but causes of sciatica vary widely. Therefore, it is crucial to identify the true cause of sciatica in order to apply the correct treatment for effective results.

Fibromyalgia

In most cases, patients with fibromyalgia tend to think that they cannot be totally relieved from pain. However, by resolving the causation of fibromyalgia through acupuncture and Oriental herbal medicine treatment, the fundamental solution may be approached.

Fibromyalgia starts off very similar to many other pain related diseases. At first, due to stress of specific muscle and connective tissues, mitochondria in muscle cell membrane gets damaged which develops abnormality content of ATP (form of energy that body use). This enables muscle to do its’ functions and elasticity of muscle is being lost.
If repeated, adhesion of connective tissues and muscle occurs and pain area gets extended. Eventually, pain will be widespread throughout the body. If a vicious circle continues, the nerve stimulation through spinal cord will affect the brain and this theory is called central sensitization.
At this point, due to a lower threshold for pain, the increase of sensitivity and heightened the painful response to gentle touch occurs.

In most cases, patients with fibromyalgia tend to think that they cannot be totally relieved from pain.  However, by resolving the causation of fibromyalgia through acupuncture and oriental herbal medicine treatment, the fundamental solution may be approached.

It is essential to focus the treatment to break off from this vicious circle. Acupuncture works by stimulating adhesion of connective tissues, which will help to increase normal range of muscle contractions.
For example, it is similar concept of getting hardened muscles like jerky to transform back to soft and health muscles. In addition, with Oriental herb medicine, stress and emotional disturbance that causes the fibromyalgia can release. Also, herb medicine is essential tool to recovery of lack of transport of nutrients to stiffed muscles.

In the theory of Oriental medicine, 18 tender points, which is one of the criteria to diagnose fibromyalgia all goes through the Gall Bladder and Small Intestine channels within 12 meridian channels.
These two channels are very closely related to emotional disturbance especially with stress. By opening and circulating these channels with acupuncture will definably break off the vicious cycle.

When Oriental medicine views conditions, not only they consider horizontally but also perpendicularly as well. Same with externally and internally. In the book of Canon of Internal Medicine indicates that order of disease transport form skin, meridian channels, fu organs, and zang organs. This indicates that fibromyalgia is started with unsolved damaged connective tissues combined with stress, which send impulses the pain through the spinal cord and midbrain. Also enhances the co-existing conditions such as chronic fatigue, irritable bowel syndrome, and various traumatic stress and emotional disorders.

Fibromyalgia is not an incurable disease or symptom. Depends on the causation of symptoms, acupuncture and herbal medicine treatments definably able to improve and make difference with fibromyalgia.

Spinal Stenosis

Spinal stenosis has been known as the narrowing of the spinal cord.  Due to this process, many patients suffer from localized low back pain to excruciating pain in the lower limbs.  The cause of this can be from many source but one of the common reason is slight alteration of the spine curvature can start the process of spinal stenosis.
With the help of VST, by loosening and tightening the muscles around the spine, we are able to bring back normal curvature of the spine to release any pressure that was caused from misalignment.

Pinched nerves

Many of us have heard about pinched nerve and as the word describe, “pinched” means that the nerves from the spine to the hand and feet has been compressed by bones and muscles.  Low back pain is a broad description and it is one of the most prevalent symptoms we treat at our clinic.   The symptoms of pinched nerves include numbness, tingling sensation, and dull pain around arms and legs.
The spine is a very delicate and precisely built structure but it is the muscles and ligaments that create balance of the structure.  Many factors can lead to pinched nerves but majority of the time, wrong posture leads to changes of surroundings around spine and eventually causes the changes of orientation of the spine.
In these cases, using the VST diagnosis technique, we are able to assess the exact origin of the muscles and ligaments that are causing imbalance of the spine.  This allows us to non-invasively access the site that is causing the pain and brings back balance of the spine to resolve the issues.

Post surgery

After your scar has been healed from the surgery, you might still feel pain.  No matter how small the incision, scar tissues will be created in the areas where the scopes were entered.  Scar tissues are created for adhesive purpose but these tissues are incapable of having blood supply or nerve conduction.  The larger the incision was from surgery, the more scar tissues are made and have occupied extra space in your body that causes blockage of flow of natural blood and fluid.
Scar tissues creates blockage to the area but also pulls the surrounding muscles to create tensions.  By using VST, we can reduce the tension of the muscles which increase the blood circulation to the surgical area.

TMJ disorder

Temporomandibular joint and muscle disorders (TMJDs), commonly called “TMJ,” are a group of conditions that cause pain and dysfunction in the jaw joint and the muscles that control jaw movement.
Some estimates suggest that over 10 million North Americans are affected. Many patients suffer from pain from unknown causes and most of them are offered treatment options that generally mask symptoms (e.g., NSAID’s, analgesics, cortisone injections, etc.). However, by understanding and treating the source of the patient’s pain, physicians may be able to treat much more effectively without implementing analgesic and muscle relaxant use that is prone to the development of tolerance and often associated with negative side-effects. A more holistic view of the body will equip physicians to properly locate the source of pain within the vertices. And by recognizing and treating these misaligned areas, physicians will be able to treat and prevent various types of musculoskeletal conditions.
There are methods to treat TMJDs in conservative and noninvasive techniques such as splint or bite plate for relieving muscle tension, and a simple injection of cortisone medication. As a last resort, surgical replacement (often irreversible) of the jaw joints with artificial implants is available. However, these treatment methods do not resolve the cause/source of TMJDs. We use Tensegrity Model Acupuncture as known as Vertex Synchronizing Technique Acupuncture (VST) to achieve realignment of joint structure biomechanically in 3 dimensions for treating TMJDs.

Osteoarthritis

Osteoarthritis is known to be caused by aging or ‘wear and tear’ of the joints.  Majority of the people live with the pain caused from hip or knee joints thinking it is age related symptoms.  However, this is not because you are getting old.  Age does play a part but more so it is because of weaknesses of the muscles and tendons that surround the joints.  Prolong sitting or standing, repetitive motions and bad posture creates imbalance of muscles around the joints.
Using VST, we can measure the weaknesses or tightness of the specific muscles that connects to the joints.  Then we are able to use acupuncture to loosen any tight muscles and strengthen any weakened muscles to find balance of the area.

Herniated Disc

We hear people say, “I blew my back” or “My disc went out.” All these phrases are familiar terms that we used often with low back pain.  Many times, people believe it was a sudden incident that caused the back to fail; however, herniated disc is not a sudden incident but the spine has been under a great pressure for long time.
We have discs that functions as a shock absorber in between vertebral bones when pressures are created.  Due to the structure of our spine, we are constantly creating pressure from the top to bottom and bottom to top.  However, discs are in between the bones to protect and create space for fluids and blood to flow through our spine.  Also, we have ligaments and muscles that are closely holding onto the spine’s orientation to prevent any sudden changes of our body structure.
When a person has a herniated disc, the tension and torque created was greater than what the person’s spine could protect.  This means that the back has been in under great pressure for long time and it finally gave up due to its long term stress.
Therefore, herniated disc is a difficult to treat but with proper alignment exercises and VST treatment, we are able to release pressure on the back by treating the muscles and ligaments that has been stretched or compressed to guide the disc to find its original place and bring balance to the spine.
